Letter from Father Peter

Phases

Phase One

Phase One is the largest undertaking of the Capital Campaign, focusing on the interior of the church. It will include a newly designed sanctuary that focuses on lifting our eyes, minds and hearts to Heaven. As a parish dedicated to Mary our Blessed Mother, it will include many elements that tell the story of Mary from conception to being crowned with stars in the book of Revelation. It will also include upgrades throughout the church including new carpet, refurbished pews and kneelers, redesigned confessionals and a new elevator.

Phase Two

Phase Two of our Capital Campaign will focus on updating the church grounds and exterior of the church and will include resealing and repairing the parking lot, updating the siding on the West and South side of the church and installing security cameras throughout our church campus.

Phase Three

Phase Three will focus on updating the Religious Education building by making restrooms ADA accessible and compliant, replacing carpet and replacing the aging boiler.

Theology of Sanctuary Elements Explained

The sanctuary is an important part of any Church. Its beauty is meant to lead us deeper into prayer and lift our eyes, minds, and hearts to Heaven. We are a parish dedicated to Mary, and so we want this expressed in our sanctuary for our times of prayer.

Painting of the Immaculate Conception

This is the name of our parish, so we want to highlight this in particular. It is Mary being conceived without the stain of Original Sin.

Painting of the Annunciation

The reason that Mary was conceived without original sin was for the very important role she would have in our salvation, namely, the Incarnation. This happened at the Annunciation, which is the mystery of the Incarnation through the eyes of Mary.

Blue background with stars

This culminates the life of Mary, so we have from her conception to her being crowned with stars reflected in Revelation. Also, in her apparition as Our Lady of Guadalupe, the patroness of the Americas, she is clothed with a mantle covered in stars.

White marble tile

This is to help set apart the sanctuary from the rest of the Church. The sanctuary has the dignity of being the place where we celebrate Mass, and Jesus is made present. So we want it to hold a special place in our Church and is meant to be a place “set apart” or sanctified. The white marble with gray veins signifies the moon, which has long been an image of Mary; someone who reflects the light of the Son. She has also appeared at various times with the moon at her feet.

The gold behind the Altar

Draws our attention to the center of our faith - the crucifixion, the tabernacle, and the Altar. These three things are what it is all about, namely the Eucharist, which is the source and summit of our faith.

The three stairs ascending to the Altar

Signify the Holy Trinity, and also the three Theological Virtues of faith, hope and love.

Heavenly Father,

We praise You for You are the source of life. We thank You for our parish and the many blessings You have given us over the past 159 years. Open our hearts and minds to Your purpose and vision. Help us to be good stewards of the many gifts You have given us, sowing seeds now and for future generations of saints to come. Help us be like Mary, always faithful to You. We especially pray for the success of our capital campaign. Together, help us step forward in faith and recommit ourselves to Your mission of love. May our effort, combined with Your aid, allow us to serve the people of the Watertown area, and to grow with grace.

Amen.
